A Storm Sewer with Fish

This modern storm sewer manhole/drain, eschews the older Storm Sewer designation and spells out a commnd with an explanation.

DESIGN:

The punched out squares of a basic grid are about as basic a design for a sewer drein as possible, but the rim catches the eye with four fish meant to deter would-be polluters. (Wouldn't alligators be more effective?)

This cover is on 53rd St. near Newtown Creek in Queens. A few others can be seen around the city close to tidal waters.
