A Hole in the Storm
The wry vent-hole in the middle of the storm, can still provoke a smile a hundred years later. Kudos to the wits at the Department of Sewers of the Brooklyn Borough President's office.
DESIGN:
The classic, honey-comb design does not even need to say "SEWER"
UTILITY:
The Storm refers to runoff from rain and snow, which in much of Brooklyn was separated from household sewerage, from the earliest days. Something unfortunately not done in many other areas of the city.
RANGE:
This cover, which is right outside my window in DUMBO, may be endangered, along with some other old timers, by new, and necessary street repairs (2019.) There are many other examples scattered throughout the borough.
