BWAY WORD SLAW 2022 by BURST 387 is the latest iteration of a project extending back to 2007. This latest volume is a collection of more than 3686 photographs of four-letter words seen along Broadway in Manhattan, taken during the spring and summer of 2022. The words are arranged into 14 geographic ‘episodes,’ documenting the length of Broadway from Bowling Green near the southern tip of Manhattan to Marble Hill, adjacent to (but not legally a part of) the Bronx. The book is comprised of 104 page sized photo collages each with a grid of word-images, a smaller collection of images of faces posted or presented in each area, with both overlying a melange of neighborhood scenes. Overall, the book seeks to document the overwhelming sea of words, faces and images through which ordinary New Yorkers swim every day. Also included in this volume are two short essays about the Word Slaw project and the background of creator BURST 387.
The book is a cloth-covered codex, hand bound, with 104 studio-made pigment prints, in a cloth covered slipcase. Both book and case have a unique pigment print appended on the front face. Prints are produced using archival pigment inks on Hannemühle 100% cotton 220gsm paper. Edition size 4.
