Workmanlike Coal Chute

A. Perlman Iron Works was located on West Farms Road an later on Washington Ave. in the Bronx and was active from around 1909 to the 1980's. It specialized in ornamental iron work, and is most known for the ironwork around the viaduct of Grand Central Terminal. The inimitable Walter Grutchfeld has more here.

In the era when each tenement needed a sidewalk coal chute, Perlman supplied a handsome product with a no-nonsense design.

Sidewalk coal chute.

This example was seen on East 111th St. between 1st and 2nd Avenues in East Harlem. Walter Grutchfeld noted several others identical to this one on the east side of Manhattan.
