A Field Guide to New York City Manhole Covers

Contemporary Valve Cover

This little steam-valve cover sits across from the United Nations, but is a rather unsightly addition to the streetscape. The center, rather than a carefully designed cover, seems to be almost makeshift, made of lightweight fiberglass composite, carefully marked, but haphazardly installed. A small exemplar of ConEd's currently debased approach to street installations.

DESIGN:

A laser cut S in a cheap-looking composite.

UTILITY:

This cover sits in a small field of other ConEd manholes, which may have been part of the steam system eminating from the former generator plant on nearby East 41st St.

RANGE:

There may be more of these birds, but I tend to look the other way!
