A Field Guide to New York City Manhole Covers

BRAUNFELS BROWNING CO

cover image

From the omnicient Walter Grutchfield we learn that Braunfels, Browning & Co were hardware dealers from 1906 to 1926. After the death of George Braunfels, the company re-incorporated as Browning Brothers Hardware (see below).

DESIGN:

Braunfels, Browning and Co were hardware dealers, not makers, and the design on their coal-hole covers was essentially the same as offered by several other dealers in upper Manhattan.

UTILITY:

Coal was delivered directly from a truck to a basement bin or sidewalk vault.

RANGE:

This is the only Braunfels Browning cover I have encountered;mid-block on Fifth Ave between 128th ad 129th Sts. There may well be more.
