The Word Slaw series of photographs and books attempt to capture the flavor of particular areas by viewing them through an odd filter, the collection of words that one encounters along the street during a particular period of time. The many words seen are filtered further by collecting only words with four letters -- providing a framework from which variations in lettering, coloring and context can be better seen. The Broadway series returns every few years to the same area and the constants and variables in the words and their presentation offers a wry examination of the changes to the neighborhoods along its route as the area grows richer and richer.
