A Field Guide to New York City Manhole Covers

SEWER B of B

Long Island City Erratic

cover image

When You Were Not Watching

Although it appears to be just an ordinary Borough of Bronx sewer cover, this lid must have a story to tell. One that after nearly a century, left him lying in a street corner on Van Dam Street, in Long Island City, Queens.

DESIGN:

With its sprightly spelled out SEWER, this is about as cheery as a honeycomb sewer cover can get. And enjoy the juvenile freshness of the Bronxers retort to the prissy Brooklyn ST(hole)RM covers.

UTILITY:

S-E-W-E-R this is not your granny's quilting bee.

RANGE:

Honeycomb covers are found throughout the city. This stray is at Van Dam St. and 35th St. in Long Island City.
