A Field Guide to New York City Manhole Covers

CAMPBELL FDY CO

HARRISON NJ

8 VENTS

This cover is similar to the dated series of covers produced by the Campbell Foundry from the 1940's (or earlier) to the 1990's (or later) except in this case the year is not inscribed in the inner circle, and the foundry name forms the horizontal badge.

DESIGN:

The central badge of this design is a variant of the first cover below. The slightly decreased width of the badge creates 4 sided coffered areas, that in the dated versions hold the dates. (cover 2)

UTILITY:

The vents are a strong indicator that the cover is over a drainage line.

RANGE:

This cover is in the Conservatory Garden section of Central Park, Manhattan. Other examples are found througout the city.
